Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh): The residence of history-sheeter Vikas Dubey, the prime accused in Kanpur encounter case, is being demolished by the district administration on Saturday.

As many as eight police personnel were killed in the encounter which broke out after they went to arrest Vikas in Kanpur's Bikaru village on the intervening night of July 2 and 3.

At least 25 police teams have been formed to under a massive manhunt to nab the accused associated with the killing including Dubey.

The encounter took place when the police team was approaching to arrest Vikas Dubey, who is facing over 60 criminal cases, near Chaubeypur police station.

As the police team was about to reach the hideout of the dreaded criminal, a hail of bullets was showered on them from a building rooftop. The incident left Deputy SP Devendra Mishra, three sub-inspectors and four constables dead while seven others, including a civilian, were injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh police have also gunned down two criminals in the combing operation in the aftermath of the encounter on Friday. An FIR has also been filed against 35 people, including Vikas Dubey, at the Chaubeypur police station for murder and looting of weapons.

Earlier, a team of Uttar Pradesh police raided Vikas's brother Deep Prakash Dubey's house in Lucknow and took him into the custody on Friday. The police also took Deep's wife and daughter into the custody.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed grief on the tragic demise of the policemen and paid floral tributes to them.

"Government will provide an ex gratia of Rs 1 crore each to the kin of deceased, pension and government job," CM Adityanath announced. He also directed Director General of Police HC Awasthi to take strict action against criminals and sought a report of the incident.

The final rites of the martyrs were also performed at their native districts with full state honours.
