Finish arguments by Oct 18 in Ayodhya case: CJI to lawyers

The Supreme Court bench hearing the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute on Thursday set October 18 target to complete hearing in the case.

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Thursday asked the lawyers to complete the hearing in connection with the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute by October 18. He discussed the schedule with the advocates. Gogoi also asked Advocate Rajeev Dhawan if 2 days is enough for him to finish his submissions, to which Dhawan has replied that it is possibly less.

The Supreme Court said that it cannot give an extra day after October 18 for parties to complete their submissions in the case.

Today is the 32nd day of hearing in the case.

Earlier, the Supreme Court-appointed has ruled that the mediation panel can continue the arguments are concluded on October 18.

The court has ruled that the mediation can continue till the arguments are concluded on October 18.

The Supreme Court had in March appointed the panel headed by former apex court judge F.M.I. Kalifulla and consisting of spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravishankar and senior advocate Sriram Panchu, with the hope that it would be able to evolve a consensus on resolution of the 70-year-old dispute.

The apex court had fixed the seat for the mediation process in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh, which is approximately 7 km from Ayodhya.
In May, the top court extended the time for the mediation committee till August 15.

The court said the members of the committee were not experiencing any difficulty in the mediation process even though the Hindu parties contended that it was not moving in the positive direction and told the court it is destined to fail.
