Agra: In a shocking incident of caste-based violence, a Dalit groom was assaulted even as the members of the wedding procession were also thrashed allegedly by the members of the Thakur caste in Agra district of Uttar Pradesh, sources said. Police have registered a case into the incident while further investigation into the matter is going on.
A police officials said that the incident is of May 4 while on May 8, a case was registered against the accused in the case. In the complaint lodged at the police station into the incident, the complainants said that a wedding procession of a Dalit groom was on way to the marriage hall in Sadar Bazar area of Agra district where he was to get married to Geeta, a resident of Sohalla Jatav Basti on May 4, Thursday.

The procession was passing through the locality of the Thakurs, who passed casteist slur at the groom riding a mare, the complainants said. The accused did not stop at the casteist words and assaulted the groom leading to injuries in his nose, they alleged. The members of the Dalit community further said that the people of Thakur community also thrashed the baraatis leading to injuries to many of them.
An FIR was lodged at Sadar Bazar police station in the matter on May 8, Monday. The Dalit community members have named Yogesh Thakur, Rahul, Sonu Thakur and Kunal Thakur in the complaint for thrashing them with sticks and rods. The members of the Dalit communty further alleged that that the accursed also snapped the power supply at the marriage hall thereby causing disruption in the wedding function.
They further alleged that the local police did not entertain their complaint initially. It was only after they approached Police Commissioner Dr. Pritinder Singh, the FIR was registered, they said. ACP Sadar Bazar Archana Singh said that a case has been registered against the accused under several sections including the SC-ST Act. A manhunt for the accused is going on.
