Moradabad: The ice cream sector is facing a major setback this summer amid nationwide lockdown. The industry which largely depends on the four months of the summer season has been nearly washed out due to coronavirus pandemic.
The demand for ice cream increases during the month of March to June for organising wedding and events. However, this year the demand has been dull and after the coronavirus pandemic, it completely came at a halt.
Moreover, the traders who stocked ice cream before the lockdown, are forced to spend thousands of rupees daily to preserve the ice cream in frozen condition.
The retail ice cream vendors are finding it difficult to sustain their families due to the financial crisis. The ice cream vendors earned Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 every day during the summer. The consumption has dipped as bulk buyers like hotels and restaurants remained closed.
Six businessmen of Moradabad district are not able to sell ice cream worth Rs 10 crore a year. They cater to over 1,000 retail traders in the city and villages who sell ice cream on roads and lanes.
After facing financial instability the retail vendors are moving back to their native villages. Muradabad is included in the list of the red zones of the state and most of the areas are have been declared hotspots. In such a situation, there is no hope for the business to revive.
