Barat held hostage in Uttar Pradesh as 'different' groom turns up

In what could be termed as a rare incident, a barat was held hostage in Uttar Pradesh's Etah district as bridegroom's family allegedly 'changed' the groom at the time of marriage. The bride's family has claimed that the groom who turned up to marry was not the one they had fixed the alliance with.

Etah: A barat was held hostage at Dhantigara village in Uttar Pradesh's Etah district as bridegroom's family allegedly 'changed' the groom at the time of marriage.

The bride's family has claimed that the groom who turned up to marry was not the one they had fixed the alliance with.

Sanjeev Kumar, a resident of Dhantigara, said that a few days back, he had gone to Mainpuri to see the groom for his daughter.

"When I had gone to look for the groom, I was shown a photograph of a different person than the person who actually turned up for the marriage. The groom's family betrayed us and changed the groom at the time of marriage," Kumar said showing his anguish.

Meanwhile, the bride's family had taken the groom's family hostage and filed a police complaint against five members of the groom's family. Later, the bride's family also demanded that the amount of Rs 12 lakh, which they spent for the marriage preparations, should be returned to them.

It is to be noted that after the intervention of the police the barat was freed. The police said that a case has been filed against the incident and the matter is being investigated.
