Varanasi: Regarded as the spiritual capital of India, Varanasi is also famous for 'Aurangabad House' which was once home to former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Pandit Kamlapati Tripathi. He was former Union Minister of Railways for two terms, first from 1975 to 1977 and then briefly in 1980.
Pandit Kamlapati Tripathi was associated with the Congress party and his father, who was involved in the freedom struggle, used this as an assembly house for political meetings. The house is still used for political meetings and his future generation is carrying forward this legacy.
Today, the fourth-generation of Pandit Kamlapati Tripathi is also active in politics. Tripathi's son Lokpati Tripathi, grandson Rajeshpati Tripathi and great-grandson Laliteshpati Tripathi had been in the Congress party and had been chosen by people as their representatives several times.
Professor of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Satish Rai said, "This house had been the epicentre of politics for more than 70 years. Though the country had faced several changes and there were many new parties formed, the members of Tripathi family had been loyal to the Congress party. Pandit Kamlapati Tripathi's great-grandson, Laliteshpati Tripathi is also an active leader in the Congress party."
He further said, "In 1936, Kamlapati Tripathi fought his first election from Chandauli and won from here. He wished to contest from Varanasi but was given a ticket from Chandauli by the party. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru started his campaign from Chandauli itself, that helped him to emerge victorious from here."
Earlier, Laliteshpati Tripathi won from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in the year 2012. Currently, he is a Congress candidate from Mirzapur Lok Sabha seat. Now, he is holding the patronage of Aurangabad House in Varanasi.
Will he add more stars to the glory of the Aurangabad House? The answer will be unfolded on May 23 when the results for the general elections will be announced.
