Wanaparthy (Telangana): Though almost every village in India wakes up to the crowing of roosters at the break of dawn, the situation is different in the tiny hamlet of Kanchiraopally in Telangana's Wanaparthy district.

Villagers believe violating the rule could invite a curse

The 500-odd residents of the hamlet in Pebbair Mandal, which recently became a Panchayat, refrain from consuming chicken, eggs, and even fish. Further, villagers do not even raise these animals.

But what is the reason behind it?

Explaining the story behind their unique food habits, a resident of the village said, "Our guru Somsadh Bhaoji once saw a hen swallowing his saliva, and decided that one must never raise or consume such animals. Following his instructions, anyone with the surname Ratlavat refrained from consuming the meat of chicken and fish."

Villagers believe that violating their Guru's instruction could invite a curse upon them. During celebrations or feats organised in the village, either mutton or goat meat is served. Even when villagers visit their relatives, they are served the same.

However, the rule is not applicable to women who get married outside and leave the village, who are free to consume chicken, fish and eggs. But women who get married to men from the village and move in, are advised to stop consuming the meat of the animals a month in advance, in order to adjust to the new eating habits.

A woman, who got married into the village six years ago, said that she now does not have cravings for the forbidden meats, and even the thought of consuming chicken brings about a feeling of nausea.

Villagers who move out of Kanchiraopally however, continue to follow their unique food habits religiously, having immense respect for their customs.

EATING CHICKEN AND FISH IS FORBIDDEN HERE

Chicken, it’s the most loved food these days. Egg is another high protein nourishment. Fish is a favourite for many people. Besides vegetarians, others cook these three foods in avariety of ways and relish them. But the members of a hamlet in Wanaparthy avoid them at all costs. They have been staying away from chicken and fish meat since many generations. They don’t raise these animals either. While other villages wake up to crowing roosters, this hamlet is devoid of them.

This strange village-hamlet is Kanchiraopalli in Pebbair Mandal, Wanaparthy district. Recently, this hamlet with a population of 500 became a Panchayat. The reason they abstain from eating chicken or fish is because their guru SomsadhBhaoji has instructed them against it. He saw a hen swallowing his spittle and decided that one must never raise or eat such animals. From then, anyone with the surname Ratlavat refrained from eating meat of chicken and fish. If someone goes against this rule, the villagers believe that they would be cursed.

During festivals, the dwellers of this hamlet eat lamb and mutton. If they visit their relatives or vice versa, only mutton should be served. Women who marry and leave Kanchiraopalle can eat anything they want. But to-be daughters-in-law of the hamlet must stop eating chicken and fish one month before their wedding. Women who married and moved to the hamlet say that they don’t feel like eating these foods at all and that they throw up if they tried to eat forcibly.

People who migrated from Kanchiraopalle to other places follow these food practices without fail. Even the current generation respects this custom.
