Spike in Covid cases in Telangana on, takes it ahead of AP, K'taka

Telangana has seen a huge spike in COVID-19 cases with 879 people testing positive on Tuesday. This is the highest single-day spike in the state taking the total tally to 9,553, overtaking both Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Hyderabad: The huge surge in Covid-19 cases in Telangana continued with 879 people testing positive on Tuesday.

This is the highest single day jump but only slightly higher than Monday's tally of 872. The fresh cases pushed the state's tally to 9,553, overtaking both Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Telangana is now at 10th spot among states with highest number of Covid-19 cases.

The state also saw three deaths due to Covid-19 on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 220.

Greater Hyderabad continued to be the biggest hotspot, accounting for 652 of 879 cases reported on Tuesday. Officials said 176 cases were reported from Medchal and Rangareddy districts bordering Greater Hyderabad.

The director of public health said 219 people recovered from Covid-19 and were discharged from hospitals on Tuesday. So far 4,224 people have recovered. The number of active cases now stands at 5,109.

Officials said 3,006 tests were conducted on Tuesday, taking the cumulative figure to 63,249.

The number of COVID-19 cases saw a big surge since last week when authorities began mass testing in Greater Hyderabad and surrounding districts.

The government has announced that 50,000 tests will be conducted over a week to 10 days. The process began last Tuesday.
