Rains lash Bengaluru, Hyderabad; IMD predicts heat wave in Delhi

Significant rainfall was recorded yesterday at several places in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu while thunderstorms were observed over many places in India, as per IMD. A heatwave alert was issued in Delhi as the temperature crossed 45 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Hyderabad : Heavy rains lashed Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other parts yesterday. In its forecast for Delhi today, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for a heatwave as the temperature crossed 45 degrees Celsius on Sunday. South West Delhi’s Najafgarh recorded 46 degrees Celsius on Sunday, the season’s highest maximum temperature. The country's highest temperature of 46.4 degrees centigrade was recorded at UP's Mathura on Sunday.

Delhi is likely to witness a partly cloudy sky with heatwave conditions at isolated places with strong winds. After two days of a continuous heatwave, rainfall is likely to start over northwest India from May 24, said the IMD. The scorching heat on Sunday kept the Delhiites indoors resulting in less traffic and deserted markets in the usually crowded weekend.

As per the weather body, the heatwave is likely to prevail in the National Capital on Monday with the maximum temperature likely to settle around 43 degrees Celsius while the minimum at 27 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season's average. A “heatwave” is declared when the maximum temperature is over 40°C, and 4.5°C above normal, or the reaches 45°C or more for two consecutive days.

As per an IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) bulletin, significant rainfall was recorded at several places in south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu while thunderstorms were observed at isolated places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema and other places.

Heat wave conditions prevailed in some parts of West Rajasthan and in isolated pockets of south Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and adjoining central parts of Gangetic West Bengal. Minimum temperatures were above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at a few places over Kerala, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

They were appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to - 5.0°C) at a few places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Assam & Meghalaya and at isolated places over Madhya Pradesh; below normal (- 1.6°C to -3.0°C) at a few places over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha and at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the lowest minimum temperature of 18.5°C was reported at Pantnagar (Uttarakhand) over the plains of the country.

There are likely thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (speed 40-50 kmph) at isolated places over Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Gangetic West Bengal. Also, lightning and gusty winds (speed 30-40 kmph) are likely at isolated places over Vidarbha, Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana and Kerala and Mahe along with lightning at isolated places over Odisha, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
