Man kills wife, cites COVID-19 infection as cause of death

. Ramawath Vijay Nayak, an auto-rickshaw driver, killed his wife Kavitha in Hyderabad's Vanasthalipuram area on June 18 while she was asleep, the police said. The man told the girl's family that she died of COVID-19.

Hyderabad: Police on Saturday arrested a man for killing his wife and for hatching a conspiracy to conceal the true cause of her death. Ramawath Vijay Nayak, an auto-rickshaw driver, killed his wife Kavitha in Hyderabad's Vanasthalipuram area on June 18 while she was asleep, the police said. The man told the girl's family that she died of COVID-19.

According to Rachakonda CP Mahesh Bhagwat, Vijay suspected Kavitha's fidelity and after killing her he took the body to Pilligundla village in his auto-rickshaw. While performing her last rites, he even tried to restrain her relatives from touching the body, citing the risk of Covid-19 infection. However, Kavitha's kin raised suspected something amiss when the COVID-19 tests results of those who attended the funeral turned negative. The girl's relatives later approached Vanasthalipuram police station and lodged a complaint against Vijay.

Police swung into action and immediately got Kavitha's body exhumed and arranged for a post mortem which revealed that she was not infected with Covid. The autopsy report clarified that she suffered injuries on her neck, pointing out the possibility that she was smothered with a pillow when she was sleeping. During the investigation, Vijay revealed that the couple had some misunderstandings following which he started suspecting her character and was determined to kill her.

Vijay has been remanded in police custody and further investigation into the matter is underway.
