Puducherry: The Union Territory of Puducherry is famous as a getaway for people of all age. The scenic beaches, temples and subsidised booze is what adds to the charm of this southern city.

However, people visiting the city can see piles of garbage, especially the numerous liquor bottles that are carelessly thrown on the roads.

Instead of just letting the fancy bottles land in landfills, this woman from the city has taken the onus to recycle the bottle into something aesthetic and raise awareness on various issues while doing so.

Divya from V.O.C. Nagar, Mettupalayam collects the discarded liquor bottles and paints on them. She gifted it to relatives and friends and later she started getting fans on social media.

"People throw liquor bottles at tourist spots, beach parks and other major areas in the city. This adversely affects students who go to school, cleaners and the public and poses health hazards too," Divya said.

"To do my part for society, I collected broken empty liquor bottles from the roads and stored them in the trash. And since I was stuck at home due to coronavirus-induced lockdown, I used that time to draw useful paintings on those bottles,” she added.

Divya also encourages her friends to collect broken bottles on the road like her, keep them in the trash and change them into useful items.

Barath, Divya’s husband said, “My wife would pick up the liquor bottles that are on the road. I also help her with this. During the course of time, she started painting on those bottles to raise awareness on various issues. We presented those bottle paintings as gifts to our friends during auspicious occasions which they liked and appreciated much.”

In times like these when coronavirus has forced people to stay home, people like Divya are spreading hope and awareness. Her efforts are worth appreciation and should be lauded.
