Tamil Nadu: People across the state protested against the Mettupalayam wall collapse that occurred here on Monday.
Members of the Aadhi Thamizhar Peravai on Tuesday blocked the roads near Goripalayam demanding hike in ex-gratia from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 20 lakh to the families of the deceased in the wall collapse.
Meanwhile, members of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam party (TPDK) staged a protest in Coimbatore demanding the release of the people who were arrested earlier.
"The textile shop owner who constructed the wall has not been arrested so far. We demand the arrest of the textile shop owner and release all the protestors who were arrested. We urge the government to provide 25 lakhs compensation to the victim families and construct new houses for those who lost their homes," Ramakrishnan State Secretary TPDK said.
Scores of protestors blocked the roads and demanded adequate compensation, the relatives of the deceased also participated in the protest.
At least 17 people died after a compound wall collapsed and damaged three houses in Nadoor Kannappan layout in Mettupalayam on Monday morning here following heavy rain in the region. Among those dead are two children.
Tamil Nadu government has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of those, who have lost their lives.
