This Tamil Nadu lawyer is trying to weave his family out of hardship amid COVID-19 pandemic. During the lockdown, advocate Kumaran started making various eco-friendly products from bamboo and palm tree leaves to sustain his family.

Thanjavur: The coronavirus pandemic has affected all sections of people and had a lasting impact on various types of employment. Uttama Kumaran, a lawyer by profession is reeling under the effects of COVID-19 and has reverted back to his family craft to earn a livelihood.

According to reports, Kumaran, who is a native of Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu had to undergo severe hardship to attain the lawyer's degree. As the pandemic struck, Kumaran had to stay at home as Pudukkottai court was closed down.

During the lockdown, Kumaran started making various eco-friendly products from bamboo and palm tree leaves. It has been a tectonic shift in terms of job as Kumaran, a lawyer for over a decade now, is relying on the sale of products such as handmade baskets.

Kumaran wanted to pursue the art of chiselling stones but could not make it happen amidst lockdown. So the advocate decided to dive deep into basket-weaving business, which runs through his family roots. He now weaves closely nit baskets to make ends meet.

The lawyer visits nearby forest areas to collect silver date plants and makes baskets for his community. He believes that his family business will support him during the tough times.

According to Kumaran, tribal families living in his neighbourhood have not received any support from the government in terms of relief materials, essential supplies or ration.

It is also noted that he has floated an organization called the 'Kurinji Tribals Uprising Association' and is serving for the upliftment in numerous ways.
