Thoothukudi (Tamil Nadu): The Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi, which resumed its operation for the production of Oxygen amid the covid crisis in the country, has successfully completed the trial run of Oxygen production. The district collector Senthil Raj, SP Jayakumar, along with other officials inspected the trail run operation on Tuesday.
The company initially expects to supply 35 MT of liquid oxygen. The plant also has the capacity to fill another 3,000 cylinders (30MT) of gaseous oxygen per day. The cylinders required are being coordinated by SIPCOT.
Earlier last month, the Tamil Nadu govt gave permission to reopen the Vedanta Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi for the production of oxygen.

The plant was shut down in May 2018 after 13 anti-Sterlite protesters were killed in police firing.
All party leaders of Tamil Nadu gave a nod to reopen Vedanta's Sterlite plant for the sole purpose of oxygen production, citing the current COVID crisis.
