New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the Madras High Court's order directing the demolition of all resorts and other buildings along the Nilgiris elephant corridor in Mudumalai reserve forest range. The court also appointed a three-member committee to be headed by sitting High court judge, to look into the cases of illegal constructions.

Earlier in January 2020, the apex court had reserved its verdict on a batch of pleas filed by owners of resorts who challenged the Madras high court order. The petitioners argued that their resorts were sealed despite getting permission. One of the petitioners included actor and former Member of Parliament, Mithun Chakrobarti.

Back in 2011, the Madras high had ordered razing of all resorts and constructions along the elephant corridor. The tate government had also issued an order for the demolition which was challenged before the SC.
