Bengaluru: Sasikala Natarajan, who is in jail for her role as second accused after late Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha in the disproportionate assets case, may walk out of jail soon.
The president of the Amma Makkal Munnettra Kazagam (AMMK) political party is set to pay a fine of Rs. 10 crore to leave jail or her sentence may be extended for another year.
Sasikala was given a term of four years which will be completed by January 17 next year. If the fines are not paid, she could be sentenced to another year.
Therefore Sasikala began the process of paying fines through her lawyer.
In the wake of the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu next year, Sasikala wants to be out of jail.
Sasikala's lawyer Sindura Pandyan, said "we are involved in the fines process. Can't say anything at this point. I will be officially informed by evening today."
Case background
In the Rs. 66 crore disproportionate assets case, Jayalalithaa, Sasikala, Ilavarasi and Sudhakaran were sentenced to four years on February 15, 2017. Jayalalithaa had been fined Rs 100 crore. The other three were fined Rs 10 crore each. Jayalalithaa had passed away before the verdict. The four-year sentence will be completed by January next year.
