Man rescued from mortuary cabinet in Tamil Nadu dies

Seventy-four-year-old Balasubramaniam Kumar was placed in a mortuary cabinet after a fake death certificate was acquired by his brother in Kandhampatty in Salem city.

Salem: A 74-year-old man who was found alive in a mortuary cabinet has died at the Salem Government Hospital in Tamil Nadu after efforts to revive him had failed, police said.

Balasubramaniam Kumar was placed in the cabinet that was ordered by his elder brother Saravanan from a private undertaker on October 12. Saravanan claimed that his brother died at his home in Kandhampatty.

When the undertakers arrived to collect the body they found it was moving inside the cabinet. Saravanan told them that his brother's soul was trying to leave the body and that's why it was moving.

The undertaker called the police and an enquiry by health department official Malarvizhi revealed that Balasubramaniam was placed in the cabinet after acquiring a fake death certificate from a doctor.

Police have registered a case against Saravanan under two sections including negligence and another case against the management of the hospital and its doctor who issued the fake certificate.
