Kancheepuram (Tamil Nadu): Villagers engaged in the renovation work of a 500-year-old temple have found 800 grams of gold.
The Kulambeswarar Temple is said to have been built during the second Kulothunga Chola period in Uttiramerur in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu.
The temple festival committee and the people of the village decided to renovate the dilapidated temple. When the villagers removed the steps made of black stones in front of the entrance gate, they found a bundle covered with cloth.
The bundle contained gold ornaments. It is learned that the villagers demolished the 500 years old temple without proper permission from the revenue department. The information regarding this incident was given to the revenue officials.
Revenue officials who reached the spot seized the gold from the villagers. If sources are to be believed, some of the villagers managed to take away gold to their homes.
During the Nayaks reign, in the 16th-century people, gold was widely used in society. However, following foreign invasions, people buried gold which was used as ornaments on Hindu deities.
