Udhagamandalam (Tamil Nadu): Locals from the Emerald region in Tamil Nadu's Nilgiris district were evacuated after continuous rainfall led to a landslide on Thursday morning.
According to reports, a big landslide occurred at Satya Nagar in the Emerald region in the morning of August 6, following which frightened locals rushed out of their homes.
Following the incident, police and fire department rushed to the spot and evacuated the people in the are to safer locations.
"We had to move from this place to an alternative area due to the sudden landslide in the early hours of the morning. The government and district administration should clear the damaged areas," a local said.
The southwest monsoon rains have caused severe damage in the Udhagamandalam and Gudalur areas of Nilgiris district. Heavy rainfall has been continuing for the past four days in Italar, Emerald, and Avalanche areas.
Due to heavy rain, multiple landslides have been reported from the region, with many houses being damaged.
The Met department has forecast heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts between August 4 and 8.
