Chennai: Diwali celebrations turned fatal for five teenagers who drowned in the sea near Kasimedu in Tamil Nadu's Chennai on Sunday evening. Four others who were also pulled into the waters are still missing until the last report come in.
The deceased 19-year-old boy has been identified as the resident of Rasipuram area.
According to sources, a group of families from Chennai Rasipuram had gone to the Kasimedu beach to celebrate Diwali. While bathing in the sea, five teenagers were swept away by the waves.
The fishermen in fibre boat searched for the minors after being alerted. Though the fishermen rushed to their rescue it was too late. They spotted one minor's body and brought it ashore.
The Chennai police registered a case and sent the body to the local hospital. Further investigations are on.
Meanwhile, the search is on for the other four minors.
