BARC technology provides safe protected piped drinking water to a Tribal Village in Tamil Nadu

A tribal village in Tamil Nadu's the Nilgiris district has been provided piped drinking water which is purified using UF membrane-based purification system developed by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). BARC's purification method does not require electricity for functioning and does not deplete the essential minerals in the treated water supply conforming to BIS 10500.

The Nilgiris (Tamil Nadu): The Banagudi Village, in the Nilgiris district becomes the First Model Tribal Village in the State to get piped supply of Safe, Hygienic, Healthy and Clean Protected Drinking Water in all the households, using Government of India Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC)’s, the Premier Research & Development Organization par global excellence, Innovative UF Membrane-based Purification Systems which are robust alternatives for RO Purifiers for Municipal-treated water as well as Potable Water derived from other sources with BIS compliant TDS.

The project titled, 'Nanneer Gramam’ was inaugurated by Ranjeet Singh, IAS Nilgiris Collectorate on March 9.

Jackanarai Panchayat, District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) under the vision and guidance of Nilgiris District Collector, has extended Drinking Water Pipeline connections to all the individual households of the Banagudi Tribal Village with all ST population.

JCI Kotagiri NAWA (Nilgiris Adiwasi Welfare Association), an all-women NGO has taken the noble initiative to provide Safe, Hygienic, Healthy and Clean Protected Drinking Water to its adopted Tribal Village Banagudi. It has mobilized funds and installed BARC’s Unique Ultra Filtration (UF) based Online Drinking Water Purifiers to all the households.

Thus Banagudi habitation creates the record of being the First Model Tribal Village of the State to get piped supply of Safe, Hygienic, Healthy and Clean Protected Drinking Water Portable Water in all its residents, said Daniel Chellappa, senior scientist with BARC.

Unlike conventional RO Units, BARC UF Membrane-based online Drinking Water Purifiers do not deplete the essential minerals in the treated water supply conforming to BIS 10500. They do not need electricity for their operation. The unique user-friendly UF Candles are reusable and No Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) is required for their maintenance. The major highlight of these Online Purifiers is that they do not waste the treasurable treated drinking water, which is in accordance with the Court Rulings, Chellappa pointed out.

Current developments in view of NGT Principal Bench Order, Union Ministry of Environment Forest & Climate Change Draft Regulation Notification and Madras High Court Observations, necessitate installation of Drinking Water Purifiers that do not waste precious treated water.
