Namakkal (Tamil Nadu): Moved by ETV Bharat's story about Tamilarasi, a widow hailing from Kannurpatti in Tamil Nadu's Namakkal district, State Power Minister Thangamani and Namakkal District Collector Megraj gifted the family a smartphone to help her children attend online classes.

According to Tamilarasi, her children were not able to attend online classes during the coronavirus lockdown as they do not have a smartphone.

Tamilarasi lost her husband two years ago. Her eldest daughter Soundarya is attending her 3rd year for her Bachelor's degree. The second daughter is studying at a Government Higher Secondary School and her son Manikanth is studying Class 9 in the same school.

Tamilarasi's plight evoked an overwhelming response as many people came forward to help. Some wanted to provide ration, while others offered to fund the children's education.

ETV Bharat had published an article on Tamilarasi's difficulties to help her younger daughter Subasoumya to attend online classes. As a result, TN Power Minister Thangamani and Namakkal District Collector Megraj donated a smartphone to Subasoumya.

Speaking to ETV Bharat, Tamilarasi said, "Due to Corona and the extended lockdown situation colleges and schools are not yet open, and they conduct online classes for students. But in my house, there is only one mobile phone and my three children were finding it difficult to attend the classes regularly. However, my problems got solved now."

Soundarya pleads, “Although we want to study, we do not have the facilities to execute. When I was in college, I was not even given a free laptop. It would be nice if the government could help poor families like ours."

Subasoumya said, "All the three of us have been studying banking on our mother's poor earnings only. Thanks to ETV Bharat for highlighting our situation."
