Tamil Nadu: Following five murders reported in a week, Tamil Nadu Police constituted eight special teams to maintain law and order amid tensions in the Tirunelveli district. The district has reported five murders within a week, which includes two caste-related killings.
On 13 September, Sankara Subramanian aged 37 was beheaded allegedly by a gang. This murder is believed to be in revenge for the killing of a man from another community in 2013.
Following the Sankara's murder on Monday, a group of people beheaded 35-year-old man Mariappan on September 15th and placed Mariappan's head at the place where Sankara Subramanian was murdered.
Since two murders intensified the tensions in the nearby villages, TS Anbu, IGP of South Zone visited a few villages and appealed to the people to bury enmity to ensure peace. Over 1,500 police personnel had been deployed to maintain peace and social harmony in the district.
