Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has filed a caveat plea before the Supreme Court over OBC reservation in all-India seats for medical admission in Tamil Nadu. This comes a day after Madras High Court directed the Centre to constitute a committee within three months to ensure reservation for OBCs in medical college admissions.

New Delhi: A day after Madras High Court directed the Centre to frame a committee within three months to ensure reservation for OBCs in medical college admissions, Tamil Nadu’s opposition party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Tuesday filed a caveat petition before the Supreme Court.

As the Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Union government argued against a slew of petitions filed by ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), major opposition DMK and many other parties, the DMK has approached the apex court.

“DMK through its press relation secretary TKS Elangovan has filed a caveat before the Supreme Court on the order passed by the MHC pertaining to the OBC reservation case,” Senior Advocate and DMK’s Rajya Member P Wilson told ETV Bharat.

Expecting that MCI would approach the Supreme Court challenging the MHC’s order, the DMK has moved this caveat according to the party sources.

Notably, DMK President MK Stalin and Pattali Makkal Katchi ( PMK- a party representing OBC Vanniyars) had urged the Union Government not to appeal against the MHC order. Except for BJP, all other parties from the southern state wanted the Centre to form a committee to ensure legislation for OBC reservations in medical college admissions.

The major demand of AIADMK, DMK, PMK and other parties was that the Centre should not scrap OBC reservations in the state surrendered seats in All India Quota (AIQ) in Under Graduation and Post Graduation medical and dental admissions.

Though the centre gives 27 per cent reservation for OBCs, Tamil Nadu has been giving 50 per cent of reservation for OBCs (BC, MBC, BC Muslims and DNC) and 19.5 per cent reservation for SC/STs in its institutions.

Therefore, Tamil Nadu parties are expecting the centre to give 50 per cent reservation for OBCs in state-captured AIQ seats in medical admissions.
