Chennai: After reports of DMK MLA J Anbazhagan's death due to COVID-19 surfaced, authorities on Thursday revealed that 25 more DMK cadre have tested positive for coronavirus.
According to the reports, COVID-19 norms were violated at Anbazhagan's funeral after scores of DMK cadre entered the Kannamapettai burial ground defying the protocols laid down by the government.
As per protocol governing the burial of those infected by COVID-19, only four persons could be present. The Home Ministry too had capped gatherings at the funeral to 20 persons to prevent the spread of the pandemic. However, it can not be ascertained that 25 DMK cadre got infected because of the COVID-19 norm violation at the place where the body of Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni MLA J. Anbazhagan was laid to rest, an official said.

Anbazhagan was admitted to Dr Rela Institute and Medical Centre at Chromepet on June 2. According to the reports, he participated in a 'Relief material campaign' wherein he distributed food to the needy. Thereafter, the legislator started experiencing signs of weakness and mild fever yet he continued to work. After his health condition deteriorated, he was immediately taken to a hospital.
The hospital authorities stated that his condition worsened gradually despite the best medical treatment. In fact, his health remained critical throughout his stay. "He was on the ventilator, at one point he required less oxygen, all of us thought he was recovering but unfortunately he had too many comorbidities," a doctor added.
A bulletin issued by the hospital read " Inspite of full medical support, Anbazhagan succumbed to his illness, he was declared dead at 8.05 a.m."
