Thoothukudi: A police constable died on Tuesday after a history-sheeter, whom he had gone to arrest in Murappanadu village of Thoothukudi district, hurled a country-made bomb at the police team.
In the incident which took place at Manakkarai here, constable Subramanian died on the spot while the history-sheeter Durai Muthu suffered injuries, a senior police official said.
As per reports, two murder cases among others were pending against Muthu and a special team reached the area following information.
Of the two bombs that were hurled at the police team, the second one exploded, fatally injuring the constable in the head, the official said.
Muthu had been rushed to a government hospital in neighbouring Tirunelveli where he breathed his last, police said.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced a compensation of Rs 50 lakhs to the family of the police constable. He also announced that one member of his family will be provided government job.
Meanwhile, Palaniswami, in a statement in Chennai, condoled Subramanian's killing and termed his death as "unfortunate" which occurred while discharging his official duties and expressed his sympathies with the family of the deceased.
