Chennai: Speaking to reporters, Minister for Fisheries D. Jayakumar said, "There is nothing wrong with the Governor replying to the Leader of the Opposition on the issue of medical reservation. Medical counselling will take place only after getting approval of the 7.5 percent reservation bill from the governor."
"DMK chief Stalin is trying to create an image that the reservation got its approval because of DMK. We can't compel Governor to approve the 7.5% reservation bill," he added.
Earlier in September, the TN Assembly unanimously passed the Bill to provide 7.5 percent horizontal reservation in undergraduate courses in medicine, dentistry, Indian medicine and homoeopathy for government school students who have cleared NEET. Yet, the TN governor has not approved the bill.
TN Governor faces the heat
With political parties up in arms against him, Governor Banwarilal Purohit faces heat. The issue is that the Governor is sitting over the Bill providing for horizontal reservation of 7.5% in Medical admissions to Government school students who have cleared NEET.
Even as counselling is set to begin, Purohit, in his letter to DMK president Stalin, had made it clear that he would take 3-4 weeks to decide on the Bill. Not only the opposition, but even the allies of AIADMK have also criticised the Governor. The government is sulking at the delay.
The Governor is said to have pressed for the govt to accept 10% EWS Quota to clear the bill. He is seen as carrying out the diktat of the Centre. The CPI(M) has asked for his recall.
