Theni (TN): A sudden raid at a shop in Theni Lok Sabha constituency of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday night invited a face-off between AMMK workers and police during which latter had to open fire in the air to disperse the supporters of TTV Dhinakaran-led AMMK. AMMK workers were opposed to the action taken by the enforcement agencies, officials said.
The raiding team, comprising officials of the Election Commission-appointed surveillance squad and officials of the income tax department, seized bundles of cash allegedly meant for distributing them to the voters, they said.
When the raiding team arrived at the shop, the owner, believed to a supporter of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), fled the spot after pulling down the shutter.
Soon, an argument broke out between AMMK workers and the officials resulted into chaos and police had to fire four rounds in the air to dissuade AMMK workers, they said but no one was injured, a senior police official informed.
Four AMMK men were detained in connection with the incident. The officials said a large number of well-packed bundles of notes mentioning details as to their delivery destinations were recovered from the shop.
"The packets carried the details of ward numbers and voters and along with a figure of Rs 300 written on each of them. The raid is continuing," the senior official said.
Polling in Tamil Nadu will be held on April 18. Earlier, the Election Commission countermanded election to the Vellore parliamentary constituency on charges of illegal cash used to lure voters there.
