Kanyakumari: Ensuring a humane touch to the persons suffering from mental illness; abandoned and found loitering on the streets of Kanyakumari district, volunteers of 'Desiya Narseithi Uliyam' have taken up the noble task of transforming their unkempt appearances.
A team of 15 volunteers had recently brought in eight such mentally-ill persons, wandering on the streets near Kalakkadu of Thirunelveli district, and gave them a makeover by giving them a hair cut along with a bath. Subsequently, they were provided with new clothes and food, biryani to be precise, to eat.
One of the main reasons for the organisation's emphasis on mentally-ill is the stigma they face in the society along with the indifference meted out by the respective governments.
Speaking to media, one of the many representatives of the organisation, Joshua Solomon said: "The number of mentally-ill persons has increased in the district and the government had failed to address the situation. With the help of retired officials, government teachers and others, we are able to serve such people. Many of them provide money from their monthly pensions/salaries, after which we randomly choose a place to help the mentally challenged persons, every month."
They further asserted that their efforts have been lauded by the locals and hoped that they would continue the work until the issues of mentally-ill persons, in the district, are addressed.
