Churu (Rajasthan): At a time when drinking water service has been extremely commercialised, with private industries charging a minimum of Rs.10 for half a litre of packaged drinking water, the Agarwal community in Sardarshahar of Rajasthan's Churu district has taken the responsibility to provide unlimited and free of cost drinking water to the needy on the streets.
With the temperature soaring as high as 50-degree celsius during summers in Rajasthan, the free water service provides relief and refuge to a lot of people who cannot afford to pay every time they feel thirsty.
"We started this service 15 years ago, and we have expanded our reach to three areas of the district. We provide free of cost water for five to six months in a year during summers," said Pawan Poddar, a representative from the Agarwal community.
The water-filled trolleys are taken around the alleys of Sardarshahar twice a day. The first service starts from 9 am in the morning and ends at 1 pm in the afternoon, while the second service commences at 2 pm and ends at 6 pm in the evening.
