Gale havoc in Rajasthan: 14 killed, Tonk worst affected

The gusty winds accompanied by thunderstorm caused loss of lives and a largescale destruction in several districts of Rajasthan on Thursday. At least fourteen deaths were reported in the state.

Jaipur: At least fourteen deaths were reported in Rajasthan when gusty winds accompanied by thunderstorms and rains lashed the various parts of the state on Thursday night. The maximum 12 deaths were reported in Tonk distrct and remaining two in other parts of the state.

The gale accompanied by thunderstorms caused large destructions in various part of the state. The state's capital city Jaipur, Tonk, Dhaulpur, Bharatpur and Kota were the worst affected areas. Strong winds blowing at a speed of 50 km per hour uprooted several trees as well as snapped the high tension power line. Several areas in Kota plunged into darkness.

The 25000 KV line in Kota was shutdown due to gale. The train operation came to a grinding halt. An emergency-like situation arose in the Kota division of the Indian railways.

A 10-feet-high wall of the Madrassa collapsed and fell on a house in Dhanna Talai area in Tonk district. Three persons sleeping inside the house were buried alive under the debris. Among the casualties, three deaths were reported in Niwai, two in Malpura, one in Uniyara and one in Todaraisingh of the district.

Besides, several people sustained injuries in different parts of the district. The injured were undergoing treatment at a hospital in Tonk district. Many thatched houses having tin roofs were damaged in the hailstorm. Tin or asbestos roofs were blown away in the strong winds. Many districts were plunged into darkness. Trees were uprooted and fell on the ground in different areas of the district.

Rajasthan's capital city Jaipur was also badly affected the gale. The incidents of power failure and house collapse were also reported in different areas of Jaipur. People sustained injuries at Mansarovar, Delhi Road, Amer and many other places in Jaipur city.

Around a dozen people were injured in a wall collapse that took place in Jai Singh Pura Khor police station area of Jaipur. One person whose name is Abid was critically injured and later succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Jaipur.

Tonk District Collector Chinmayee Gopal, "At least 12 deaths were reported in the district due to thunderstorms and rains. Our field staffers were conducting surveys to assess the loss of human lives and damage to property. The affected families will be given compensation as per the disaster management norms."
