Jaipur: An income tax officer, who was imprisoned recently for corruption charges committed suicide by hanging himself in a COVID-19 ward on the sixth floor of RUHS Hospital in Jaipur in Rajasthan on Monday.
According to sources, the deceased officer has been identified as Vinay Kumar Mangla and he was arrested by the CBI on corruption charges nearly four years ago. He was also convicted on Friday and sentenced to 5-year-imprisonment.
The deceased was tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to the RUHS hospital for treatment before to be lodged in prison.
This morning Mangla was found hanging from the ceiling of his ward situated on the sixth floor of the hospital building.
On being informed by the hospital staff, police rushed to the hospital, recovered the body and send it for the post mortem. While the exact cause behind the death of the person is yet to be ascertained, police said he took such a step due to mental pressure.
Reportedly, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested Mangla after he was trapped taking a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a person in Jhalawar four years ago. He was later released on bail. On January 22, a CBI court in Jaipur sentenced him to 5-year-imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh.
