Two youths from Amritsar duped by agents, sentenced to death in Indonesia; Families appeal to central govt for help

The youths have been accused of murdering an Indian agent and a court in Indonesia has awarded death sentence to them.

Amritsar: Two youths from Gagomahal village of Ajnala town in Punjab's Amritsar have been sentenced to death in Indonesia. Their families claimed that the youths were trapped and falsely implicated in the murder of an Indian agent. They have appealed to the central government to rescue the youths.

Ajaypal Singh and Gurmej Singh were lured by an agent who promised to send them abroad for studying. The agent promised to take them to Indonesia and then to America for Rs 35 lakh, family members said.

When the two reached Indonesia, the Indian agent allegedly took them hostage and started demanding money from them. The family members said that the agent took away the 5,000 US dollars that they were carrying and demanded more cash.

The youths reportedly got into a fight with the agent following this. Police arrested the two from Nagurah Rai International Airport while they were returning to India. The two have been charged of murdering an Indian agent. A court in Indonesia has ordered death sentence to them.

Taking to Twitter BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that the youths are innocent and sought intervention of the Ministry of External Affairs.

Sirsa wrote that the youths are "stuck in Indonesia as they were conned by the agent who is a hardcore criminal and whose family is already charged under such fraud cases... the youths were kidnapped for five days and badly beaten up in Jakarta. Now they are arrested and charged for a donkers murder/death in Indonesia but they claim they were not involved in any such thing as they were on the run to save their life."
