Shiromani Akali Dal delegation meets president over farm bills

Shiromani Akali Dal leaders Sukhbir Singh Badal, Naresh Gujral and Manjinder Singh Sirsa met President on Monday. The delegation requested President Ramnath Kovind to dismiss the Farmers' Bills.

Chandigarh: Three members delegation of Shiromani Akali Dal met President Ramnath Kovind and requested him not to sign on farmer bills passed in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Farmers in Punjab and Haryana are protesting against the bill. Talking to media after the meeting Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of Shiromani Akali Dal said that we have requested president to send back the bills to parliament.

"The bills have been passed forcefully in Rajya Sabha and farmers are against these bills. The bills should be sent back and it should be amended," Sukhbir Singh Badal said.

He further added, farmers fear that the corporate houses will forcefully grab their lands and will buy their crops at cheaper rates. It will affect 20 lakh farmers and 15 lakh labourers. "The bill will impact 65% population of country. If they are not happy what is the purpose to introduce this bill," Badal said.

The delegation has also submitted memorandum to president in which they have requested to withhold these bills.

Rajya Sabha passed the Farmers' and Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill 2020 and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill 2020 amid protest by opposition.
