Punjab passes Urban Transport Fund Bill 2019

Additional tax of 10 paise on petrol and high-speed diesel is to be paid as the Punjab Urban Transport Fund Bill, 2019, has been passed by the Punjab Assembly.

Chandigarh: The Punjab Assembly has passed the Punjab Urban Transport Fund Bill, 2019 that seeks to impose additional tax on petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD).

Under this Bill, which was tabled on the concluding day of the assembly session here on Tuesday, a 10 paise additional cess per litre will be imposed on HSD and petrol within urban area.

The Bill also seeks to levy additional cess of 10 per cent on the final price of the auctioned vanity vehicle number plates.

The Bill was presented by Local Bodies Minister Brahm Mohindra in the House.

In case of retaining old VIP vehicle numbers, Rs 25,000 for one single digit vehicle number (0001), Rs 10,000 for number (0002-0009) and Rs 5,000 and Rs 2,000 for (0010-99) and 0100-9999) respectively have also been levied, according to the Bill.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Assembly passed four other bills - Punjab Transparency Public Procurement Bill, 2019, East Punjab Members' Salaries (Amendment) Bill, 2019, The Salaries and Allowances of Deputy Ministers, Punjab (Amendment) Bill, 2019 and The Salary and Allowances of Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly (Amendment Bill), 2019.

The Akali Dal opposed the East Punjab Members' Salaries (Amendment) Bill, 2019 whereby Punjab ministers and the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) would no longer have to pay income tax on the perks allowed to them.
