NGT orders formation of panel to probe Ludhiana gas leak case

According to an estimate, 80 percent of the industrial units in this region fall under the red category. Samples of sewage from the factories are also being collected.

Ludhiana: Taking a serious note of the health hazards aftermath of the Giaspura gas leak, National Green Tribunal has ordered the formation of an inquiry committee to look into the case.

The panel will investigate the matter and submit a report to the National Green Tribunal. Meanwhile, 10 teams were formed by PPCB and municipal officials to take note of the functions of 231 industrial units functioning near the incident site. According to an estimate, 80 percent of the industrial units in this region fall under the red category. Samples of sewage from the factories are also being collected.

Meanwhile, authorities stepped up efforts to ensure safety measures for residents of localities in and around the site. The road from Sua Road to Golden Palace was closed by the police. The effect of the gas has largely been reduced, but the area is still sealed. The elderly and children are still not allowed to go near the incident site. Authorities are continuously monitoring the area with the help of the NDRF team.

Earlier, Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu said there is no headway in the case so far as CCTV cameras did not reveal anything to suggest any person or tanker putting chemicals in the sewage. Considering the seriousness of the matter, SIT formed a committee that comprises DCP Harmeet Hundal, ADCP-2 Suhail Mir, ADCP-4 Tushar Gupta, ACP South and SHO. Sidhu further said that industrial waste was not dumped for the first time. Industrial waste was often dumped but it never caused any trouble earlier. The cop added that the district police will also consult the Punjab Pollution Control Board in this matter. The officials collected DVRs of the CCTV cameras installed in the area. A broken sewage cover was found near the site. It is suspected that chemical has been found inthe tanker there.
