Morinda (Punjab): Gurudwara Kotwali Sahib in Punjab's Morinda is the place where Guru Gobind Singh's mother, Mata Gujari along with his two sons were detained.

ETV Bharat brings to you the saga of Kotwali Sahib, where Mata Gujari along with Sahibzada Fateh Singh, Sahibzada Zoravar Singh were detained for a night.

The three were detained after Gangu Brahmin, their cook tipped the Mughal soldiers in return for a cash reward from the Mughals.

Earlier, Gangu learnt that Sahibzades were carrying gold coins and developed a plan to steal their gold. Not only did he succeed, but he also raised a false alarm following the heist and claimed the presence of thieves in their neighbourhood and pointed out that one must be careful with their valuables.

Further, Gangu decided to turn them over to the Mughal army, fearing the suspicion directed against him.

Acting on Gangu’s information, Mughal authorities, Jaani Khan and Maani Khan brought Mata Gujari and the two Sahibzadas to the military outpost.

The three were neither served any food nor given any warm clothes. They were kept in a prison cell for a night and were then taken to Sirhind (now Fatehgarh Sahib) to face trial and execution.

Sikhs from faraway places visit the Kotwali to pay their respect to the Sahibzadas who showed exceptional courage in the face of cruelty and adversity.

Continuing our pious journey, on this pilgrimage, called the Safar E Shahadat—the Journey of Martyrdom—dedicated to the sacrifices and martyrdom of the four Sahibzadas of Guru Gobind Singh ji, the Tenth Guru of the Sikh nation, the Etv Bharat team has now reached Gurudwara Kotwali Sahib.

Gurudwara Kotwali Sahib is situated in Morinda. It was here that after Gangu Brahmin’s betrayal, Mata Gujari and his two grandsons, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh were detained.

As we have already narrated, that when Gangu, the Cook, learnt that Mata Gujari was carrying gold coins on her person, he not only stole them by feigning a theft at his house, but also, in the hope of getting a cash reward from Mughal authorities, betrayed Mata Gujari and the two Sahibzadas to the Kotwal of Morinda. Acting on Gangu’s information, the police inspectors Jaani Khan and Maani Khan arrested Mata Gujari and the two Sahibzadas and brought them over to the police station.

It is said that Mata Gujari and the two Sahibzadas were detained at the Kotwali for one night. They were offered no food, nor any warm clothes to wear. This place, where Mata Gujari and the two Sahibzadas were detained is marked today by Gurudwara Kotwali Sahib. Sikhs from far and wide come here to pay their obeisance to the matchless fortitude which the Sahibzadas had shown in the face of adversity, and to the exceptional sacrifice they had made to fight against injustice and cruelty. The Sikhs also seek similar inspiration for their young children and teach them their history.
