Industrial gas leak accidents in India

At least 11 people, including 5 females, were killed while 11 others fell unconscious after a gas leakage was reported at a factory in Punjab's Ludhiana on Sunday, a senior district official said.

A gas leak at a milk factory in Ludhiana's Giaspura area left 11 people dead and 11 others ill on Sunday. Alarmed authorities are working at war footing to rescue the injured and the area has been sealed so far. An NDRF team reached the area for the rescue operation. Here is the timeline of several other incidents of gas leaks that happened in the past.

  • Visakhapatnam gas leak: At least 11 people were killed and over a thousand others suffered sickness on May 7, 2020, at LG Polymers chemical plant in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Bhopal Gas leak: The mishap, reportedly a Methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leak, killed nearly 4,000 people in December 1984 at Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Over 500,000 people were exposed to the gas.
  • 2014 GAIL Pipeline Blast: Accident took place on 27 June 2014 at Nagaram, East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. At least 15 people lost their lives and over 40 people sustained injuries. The reason for the mishap was reported as a blast in an underground gas pipeline maintained by the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL).
  • 2014 Bhilai Steel Plant Gas Leak: The leakage in a methane gas pipeline at a water pump house killed six and injured over 40 people in June 2014 at Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh's Durg district.
  • 2017 Delhi Gas leak: About 470 schoolchildren were hospitalized reportedly because of a chemical leak at a container depot near two schools in Tughlaqabad depot in Delhi.
  • 2018 Bhilai Steel Plant Blast: The mishap, which killed 9 and injured 14 people, took place because of a blast in a gas pipeline of Coke Oven Battery Complex No 11 during a scheduled maintenance job in Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh's Durg district.
