New Delhi: Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Pratap Singh Bajwa, on Friday, called the resignation of Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal from the Union Cabinet as 'half-hearted' decision, questioning that why her party is still in alliance with the NDA government if they are in support of farmers.

While addressing media Bajwa said, "We welcome the resignation of Harsimrat Ji. A few days back, I made a demand that all political parties should forget about the differences and raise their voices unitedly to save the agriculture sector of India. If we would not save farmers, we will not be able to save our country."

He also alleged, "In last 3 months, Harsimrat Kaur, Prakash Singh Badal and Sukhbir Singh Badal were defending these farm ordinances. When they realised that farmers have come on streets against these legislatures and it can end their political base, then they took this U-turn. But this decision is half-hearted as they resigned from Cabinet but refused to take back their alliance with NDA."

Kaur resigned from the Union Cabinet, late on Thursday night, saying that she was "proud to stand with farmers as their daughter and sister".

"If you are in support of farmers then you should also take back your alliance with NDA otherwise people will get to know that it is just another political drama. They know that under the pressure of opposition parties, the government may send these ordinances to Standing Committee and there is a slight possibility that they can get back to the Cabinet," said the Congress leader.

Congress, along with other opposition parties, are against the Farmer's Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 that the Center had introduced in June to replace the earlier ordinances.

Congress has alleged that the Central Government wants to implement Shanta Kumar Committee report, which will badly impact the agricultural economy in India.

Bajwa said, "Minimum Support Price should remain. These will come just like East India Company and will end the agriculture sector of our nation. Do not force farmers to accept this." He even cautioned the government that such moves can affect the unity and integrity of India.

After the resignation of Harsimrat Kaur, a pressure from opposition parties has also started building upon JJP leader and Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala to stand against BJP-led Central government by resigning from his post.

"It's difficult for someone to give away power. But, when farmers will go against the government, all of them will have to resign," Bajwa replied to a question on Dushyant Chautala.

On Thursday, Congress Chief Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala also took a jibe at Chautala by tweeting, "Dushyant Ji, you should have at least enacted Harsimrat's drama of resignation by creating the post of Deputy Chief Minister. The post is dear to you, why not the farmers? There is certainly some mystery, farmers will never forgive you. The JJP, which is BJP's ally, is a partner in BJP's crime of snatching the bread and butter of farmers."
