Sirhind (Punjab): After being shifted from Kotwali Sahib to Gurudwara Shri Fatehgarh Sahib, the two youngest Sahibzadas, Sahibzada Baba Zorawar Singh, aged 9, and Sahibzada Baba Fateh Singh, aged 7 faced immurement when they refused to convert to Islam.

Gurudwara Fatehgarh Sahib: Where the two young Sahibzadas embraced death

The two younger Sahibzadas, along with their grandmother Mata Gujari, were imprisoned in the Thanda Burj, the Cold Tower, during extreme winter in the month of December (Poh). They were often summoned by Wazir Khan, the Governor or the Fauzdar of Sirhind, and made to appear in his court.

After facing gruesome torture, the Sahibzadas stood their ground to embrace martyrdom which was too much for the proud Wazir Khan to bear.

He declared the two young ones as 'enemies of the state' and ruled that both be immured.

The Sahibzadas spent their last night with their brave and courageous grandmother, Mata Gujari steadfast in their resolve to sacrifice their lives without yielding to injustice and cruelty.

The next morning, the two Sahibzadas were taken to be bricked up alive. Their grandmother then, donned them up Neela-Banas, the Blue Clothes, the colour of fortitude and sacrifice in Sikhism, and pinned a Kalgi each on their Dastaars—small turbans—and bid them goodbye.

The two young boys were bricked in alive, however, the wall fell which infuriated Khan.

Khan then ruled to slit the throats of both the children, who were in a semi-conscious state.

The two Sahibzadas embraced death and this place is now called Gurudwara Shri Fatehgarh Sahib.

In the next stage of our pilgrimage, called Safar E Shahadat, we shall take you another historical place, which is Gurudwara Bibangarh Sahib.

This pious journey of the Etv Bharat team, which is dedicated to the martyrdom of the four Sahibzadas of the Tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Shri Guru Gobind Singh ji, in its next leg, now reaches Gurudwara Shri Fatehgarh Sahib. This Gurudwara marks the historical place where the two youngest Sahibzadas, Sahibzada Baba Zorawar Singh ji, aged 9, and Sahibzada Baba Fateh Singh ji, aged 7, were bricked up alive, when they, staying firm and steadfast in their faith and beliefs, and not succumbing to pressures, temptations, coercions and tortures, refused to convert to Islam, and rather chose the path of sacrifice and martyrdom.

When the two younger Sahibzadas, along with their grandmother Mata Gujari ji, were imprisoned in the Thanda Burj, the Cold Tower, in the extreme winter of the month of Poh, they were often summoned by Wazir Khan, the Governor or the Fauzdar of Sirhind, and made to appear in his court. The Sahibzadas were told to convert to Islam, which they refused. Many temptations were tried on them, but they would not budge. They were threatened and coerced, but again they remained steadfast in their own faith. Then they began to be gruesomely tortured, but they still stood their ground with fortitude and withstood it all. Such an utter defiance of such young children was too much to bear for the cruel Wazir Khan. Then, declaring the two young tender-aged Sahibzadas who were merely 9 and 7 years old as the ‘Enemies of the State’, and accusing them of ‘High Treason’, Wazir Khan got the Qazi to issue the fatwa that the two Sahibzadas be bricked up alive in a wall.

The Sahibzadas spent their last night with their brave and courageous grandmother, Mata Gujari Ji, remaining steadfast in their resolve to sacrifice their lives without yielding to injustice and cruelty.

The morning, when the appointed time arrived, when the two youngest Sahibzadas were to be taken up to be bricked up alive, their grandmother donned them up Neela-Banas, the Blue Clothes, the colour of fortitude and sacrifice in Sikhism, and pinned a Kalgi each on their Dastaars—small turbans—and saw them off as if they were going to wed death personified.

When, in the presence of Wazir Khan, the Jalaads—the executioners—were bricking the two tender aged Sahibzadas alive, many among the present there could not fight their tears back. As if this was not enough, after sometime, the wall in which the two Sahibzadas had been bricked up alive, collapsed. This infuriated Wazir Khan even further, and he issued another order that the throats of the semi-conscious Sahibzadas be now slit. Then, following the orders of Wazir Khan, the executioners slit the Sahibzadas throats. This is how, the young Sahibzadas, Baba Zorawar Singh ji and Baba Fateh Singh ji, attained martyrdom.

The exact place where the Sahibzadas were first bricked up alive and then were martyred by slitting their throats is now marked by the presence of Gurudwara Shri Fatehgarh Sahib.

In the next stage of our pilgrimage, called Safar E Shahadat, we shall take you another historical place, which is Gurudwara Bibangarh Sahib.
