4 Punjab Congress MPs allege manhandling by police during candlelight march

Four Congress Punjab MPs organized a candlelight march towards Rashtrapati Bhawan to protest against farm bills and they alleged manhandling by Delhi Police. Protests and tensions continue after the farm bills were passed.

New Delhi: Members of Parliament took out a candlelight march towards Rashtrapati Bhawan to protest against farm bills on Monday evening. Four Punjab Congress MPs alleged manhandling by Delhi Police during the peaceful protest.


Ravneet Singh Bittu, Jasbir Singh Gill, Santokh Chaudary and Gurjit Singh Aujla of Congress were holding candles and proceeding towards Rashtrapati Bhawan when police officials stopped them. Within moments, the scuffle broke between Parliamentarians and police.

Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla said," We had sought time from the President of India. We wanted to tell him that the farm bills can have serious consequences. Farmers in Punjab are on roads to protest against the bills. We were not given time. So we were protesting symbolically and police tried to stop us."

Ludhiana MP Ravneet Bittu said, "We were holding candlelight march and were going towards President's house when police attacked and manhandled us. These are goons in uniform."

The Farm Bills have resulted in massive protests across Punjab and other parts of the country. Harsimrat Kaur Badal resigned from Union cabinet in protest and future of the alliance between Akali Dal and BJP depends on the core committee meeting of Akali Dal.
