Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has approved the suspension of Congress leader and a member of Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission, Poonam Kangra, following the registration of an abetment to suicide case against her.

Following the CM's clearance, the state government has placed Kangra's membership under suspension with immediate effect, said an official.

The CM had also ordered an inquiry against Kangra, who was arrested along with her husband and son by the Sangrur police a few days ago.

The Sangrur police had registered a case of abetment to suicide against Kangra and her family members. The case was registered after a man identified as Sanjeev Kumar committed suicide on June 4. His 27-year-old daughter reportedly eloped with one of the sons of Poonam Kangra and he was unable to trace him.

Police had booked the Congress leader, her husband, Darshan Kangra, and three sons for abetment to suicide. The sons are Vikasdeep, Rajan and Anmol. Kumar was a ward attendant at Sangrur civil hospital.

On June 14, the Sangrur police arrested Poonam Kangra, her husband and their son, on charges of abetment to suicide.
