He and his family had vacated Sri Anandpur Sahib on a cold night in 1704. His family and other Sikhs from Anandpur Sahib paused near the Sarsa river for resting.

It was then that they were attacked by Mughals who had broken their promise of safe conduct.

While many Sikhs swept in the current of the cold Sarsa river while crossing it, some managed to cross it.

Among them were Guru ji and the two elder sons and along with 40 other Sikhs.

Meanwhile, his mother Mata Gujri and two younger sons(Sahibzadas) Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh Ji could not cross Sarsa and got separated from each other.

All three along with other Sikhs kept moving alongside the Sarsa until they could find a shelter.

They were guided by their Hindu cook to a small huntment. There, they spend their night in the hut of Kuma Maski(boatman).

This journey of Mata Gujri and the two Sahibzadas from after being separated from their family to finding shelter at the huntment is called the Journey of Martyrdom.

And it was after Kuma Maski's name after which Gurdwara Chhan Baba Kuma Maski Sahib was named.

A Tribute to the Exceptional Martyrdom of the Sahibzadas Part 4

In the second stage of its Journey-of-Martyrdom, the Etv Bharat reached Gurudwara Chhann Baba Kumma Mashki ji, in Ropar. Let’s now acquaint you with the proud history of Gurudwara Chhann Baba Kumma Mashki ji. For your information, this Gurudwara marks the place where Guru Gobind Singh’s mother, Mata Gujari ji, along with her two younger grandsons, had spent the first night after their separation from the rest of the Guruji’s family.

On that fateful December night, when the Guru’s family got separated and dispersed when it crossed the Sarsa River, then Mata Gujari ji, who had with her the younger Sahibzadas Baba Zorawar Singh and Bab Fateh Singh ji, started to walk down along the Sarsa. For a long period, no habitation appears in sight. But, fighting the elements, they keep pressing on. Then, after a long and arduous journey, they come upon a rudimentary thatched hutment. Mata Gujari, with her grandsons in her train, headed straight for that hutment. Upon hearing their arrival when, Kumma Mashki, the owner of that thatched hutment, comes out of the hutment and beholds the Guru’s Mother and two of the Guru’s Sahibzadas, he is overcome with joy. He invites them inside his humble hutment and serves them to the best of his capacity.

Thus, Chhann Baba Kumma Mashki ji is the place where Mata Gujari ji, along with the two younger Sahibzadas had spent their first night after they had got separated from the rest of their family. It is worth noting that they journey traced by the two younger Sahibzadas along with their grandmother Mata Gujari ji, after their separation from the rest of the family, is known as the Journey of Martyrdom. Etv Bharat’s team has thus acquainted you, albeit briefly, with the proud history of Gurudwara Baba Kumma Mashki ji.
