BSF seizes suspected narcotics package floating in Ravi river

The Border Security Force (BSF) seized over 60 packets of heroin from the Ravi river that flows along the India-Pakistan international border in Punjab's Gurdaspur on Sunday. A 1,500-metre-long nylon rope was tied to the consignment of drugs in order to enable someone to pull it towards the bank.

Gurdaspur (Punjab): The Border Security Force (BSF) has informed that it has seized a suspected consignment of narcotics floating in river Ravi from Pakistan side to the Indian side.

"At about 2:45 am boat Naka party at Nangli Ghat observed some suspected items floating in Ravi river from Pakistan side to Indian side. Troops managed to seize the suspected items and drag them to the river bank. 60 packets of suspected narcotics or heroin, tied with a rope, found," said BSF.

The consignment was pushed into the river from Pakistan to the Indian side and Border Security Force (BSF) troops deployed at the border outpost in Nangli, near Dera Baba Nanak, spotted it in the wee hours, the officials said.

A 1,500-metre-long nylon rope was tied to the consignment of drugs in order to enable someone to pull it towards the bank, they added.

According to Rajesh Sharma, Deputy Inspector General, BSF, the troops noticed some suspicious movement in the river around 2 am and swung into action. However, the smugglers managed to flee taking advantage of the darkness, he added.

Earlier on June 13, Punjab Police have busted a Pakistan-sponsored drug and illegal arms smuggling racket with the arrest of four people, including their kingpin who is a BSF constable posted in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Monday.

Foreign-made weapons, including a 9 mm pistol along with 80 live cartridges, etched with Pakistan Ordinance Factory markings, two magazines and two cartridges of 12 bore along with drugs worth Rs 32.30 lakh were recovered from BSF constable Sumit Kumar.

Director-General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta said that constable Sumit Kumar of Gurdaspur district was apprehended along with three other members: Simarjit Singh, Manpreet Singh and Amanpreet Singh. He said that Jalandhar (Rural) Police arrested Amanpreet Singh on July 11 for murdering Jagjit.

During the investigation, Amanpreet disclosed that he and his brothers were in touch with one Shah Musa of Pakistan for smuggling of narcotics and weapons across the India-Pakistan border.
