All is not well in the Akali Dal-BSP alliance in Punjab

Following the announcement of candidates for the 2022 assembly election by the Akali Dal, Harmohan Singh Sandhu, an active leader associated with the party for the last three generations, has resigned.

Shri Chamkaur Sahib (Punjab): Following the announcement of candidates for the 2022 assembly election by the Akali Dal, Harmohan Singh Sandhu, an active leader associated with the party for the last three generations, has resigned.

After the alliance with BSP, Akali Dal had exchanged many seats. Bahujan Samajwadi Party, on the other hand, does not have any strong candidates in Shri Chamkur Sahib. BSP will take a gamble on old face Raja Narinder Singh Nanheri or bring another face. The BSP is expecting help from the Akali Dal.

The BSP is in a strong position in the Doaba region of Punjab. During the seat-sharing in the alliance, party leaders demanded Phillaur, Banga and Adampur seats. On the other hand, Akali Dal does not want to lose these seats because of its sitting MLAs.

Sources said that the protests of BSP workers and leaders in Adampur and Banga have subsided to some extent after heavy protests. Instead of these seats in Majha, BSP has been given 84 seats in Doaba and 8 seats in Kapurthala.

Harmohan Singh Sandhu is the son of former cabinet minister Satwant Kaur Sandhu, who quit the job of SSP and joined Shiromani Akali Dal. Sources said that Sukhbir Singh Badal had promised him a ticket for the assembly elections. After which he resigned from the post of SSP in 2016 but withdrew his resignation at the behest of the then Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and in 2017, Shiromani Akali Dal removed Justice Nirmal Singh from the same seat. Harmohan Singh Sandhu has resigned from Shiromani Akali Dal. He announced his resignation through a Facebook post.
