Bhadrak (Odisha): A teenager from Odisha's Bhadrak district, who partially damaged her limbs in a road accident, has pleaded for euthanasia following her family's inability to bear the expense of her treatment and lack of government support.
Sheetal and her elder sister were hit by a speeding truck on July 19 last year while they were on their way back home from school.
The brutal accident left Sheetal with severe injuries to her limbs while her sister died on the spot.
The teenager can barely lift her arms and legs and has been bedridden since the accident.
"I am unable to walk, stand or even sleep. My parents have spent a lot on my treatment. I do not wish to live anymore. The hospital authorities stopped my treatment and said that they would throw me in the verandah, " said Sheetal.
Although the state government had provided some money for the teenager's treatment, the amount proved to be grossly inadequate.
With Sheetal's family having exhausted all of their life savings, her father said, "I have spent all my life savings on her treatment. I have nothing left now. I don't know to get her treated any further."
