Bhubaneswar: A young woman, who entered wedlock less than 20 days ago, succumbed to COVID-19 on Saturday as nine hospitals denied her a bed, either because they were fully occupied or because she did not have the COVID test report.

The deceased is Swarnalata Pal. She was 25. She had tied the nuptial knot with Bishnu Charan Bhol of Indolakusiari village, Khordha district, on April 28.

Watch: 12 people among Bonda tribe test Covid positive

Pal developed a fever a few days ago and her condition deteriorated. On Saturday, as she encountered difficulty in breathing, her family members took her to the Balipatna Community Health Centre (CHC). The medical staff at the CHC advised that she be shifted to the government-run Capital Hospital here. Doctors at the Capital Hospital insisted that she be admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

However, her family decided to admit her to a hospital nearby. They rushed her to as many as nine hospitals, including AMRI and AIIMS, but she was denied admission either because of the non-availability of ICU beds or because she did not have the test report. Pal lay in the ambulance equipped with an oxygen cylinder for eight hours.

Left with no option, Pal's family members took her back to Balipatna CHC. By this time, her oxygen level had dropped drastically to 26 per cent. Tension prevailed as the CHC denied her admission. Police, who intervened, convinced the family members to take her to Capital Hospital where she was tested positive in the rapid antigen test.

However, even as procedures to admit here were underway, she breathed her last in the ambulance.
