Cuttack: The first-ever cadaveric organ transplant was successfully conducted at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Monday night.
Priyankarani Patra, a resident of Digapahandi in Ganjam was declared as brain dead in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after she met with an accident a few days back.
Even though the family was in grief, they approved the organ donations. Last night a team of doctors from SCB Medical College and Hospital arrived at the private hospital to remove Priyanka’s kidney.
It was rushed in a special ambulance to SCB ahead of Odisha’s first-ever cadaveric kidney transplant, a marathon operation that lasted for about seven hours.
While organ transplants aren’t new to Odisha, a cadaveric transplant which typically means transplantation of an organ from a dead body to another patient is a rare procedure and doctors have claimed that Priyankarani Patra’s case is probably the first such successful surgery.
