Mumbai: As the National Investigation Agency (NIA) ramps up its investigation, new developments have come to the fore in the Antilia bomb scare and Mansukh Hiren death cases.

Suspended cop Sachin Waze had planned a "fake encounter" of two persons to project their link with the explosives-laden SUV found near industrialist Mukesh Ambani's residence, sources said. This way, Waze apparently wanted to claim to have solved the case, but it did not work out, they said.

The NIA had told the court that Waze was trying to do something 'big'.

During a search of Waze's house in neighbouring Thane, the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is conducting a probe into the case, had recovered the passport of a man, whose identity has not been revealed.

The investigators suspect Waze had planned to kill the passport holder and one more person in a "fake encounter", the sources said.

Waze's plot was to carry out the encounters in an Eeco car stolen from Aurangabad in November 2020. NIA's divers found the car's number plate along with computer CPUs among other items from the Mithi river on March 28.
