Amravati (Maharashtra): On Sunday evening, Amravati district witnessed untimely rains along with strong winds. This has only added to the woes of the poor farmers.

After being badly hit with the way things have changed, due to the lockdown, torrential rains just made things worse.

In Amravati, the farmers who grow onion, orange, banana and papaya have suffered the most.

Untimely rains on Sunday evening destroyed the onions grown over two acres of land belonging to farmer Vitthal Tadas of Mozari.

'Like every year, this year too we worked hard and harvested cotton and toor dal. But at the time of the toor harvest, the wild animals created a racket in the field and the toor crop in the two-acre was spoilt," told visibly disappointed Vitthal Tadas.

He, thereafter, cultivated cotton but due to the lockdown failed to sell them.

"Finally, I planted onions with all my heart. The onions were saved from the animals but the untimely rains destroyed it," continued Tadas, who has been producing onion for the past ten years.

Pankaj Gaikwad, a farmer from Wadhona village in Dhamangaon taluka, has also been affected due to the torrential rains.

Gaikwad planted papaya on his 14-acre land last year which didn't produce as expected.

So much so, that it did not even cover the cost of the crop production. However, he did not give up and cultivated papaya this year as well. He sprayed expensive fertilisers due to which the production increased. But due to the nationwide lockdown, the papayas did not get a profitable price and the rains on Sunday damaged the entire produce.

These disappointed farmers, however, are hopeful that the government will provide aid to them, during such difficult times.
